On the northern end of the Ston isthmus, Mali Ston was founded in 1335 as part of the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). It was essentially a defensive town, meant to protect powerful Ragusa, with an impressive arrangement of walls and towers. The most outstanding feature is the fortress of Koruna, rising over the village and visible from quite a distance. The port of Mali Ston was completed in 1490 and clearly resembles the port of Dubrovnik with three arsenals, a round tower and a fortified port gate with a Romanesque statue of St Blaise over it.
Ston, and its counterpart Mali Ston, sits on the cape of land connecting the Pelješac Peninsula to the mainland. Known as a salt-producing town, Ston was an important military fort of the Ragusan Republic, and the defensive wallls are world-famous. The 900 metre encircles the area for three miles – the second largest in the world after the Great Wall of China. Despite its military history, nowadays Ston is a small, laid-back fishing town, which boasts some dramatic views – think crumbling churches, olive groves and a stunning coastline. Its proving a winner with tourists, also drawn in by the superlative oyster farms (the oysters here have been commended as some of the best in the world.)
You can experience everything that Ston has to offer in just one day, making it the perfect day trip from Dubrovnik. Give yourself at least the morning to wander the tiny village of Mali Ston and take a boat trip out into a bay to witness the harvesting of oysters and enjoy a degustation over a few glasses of local wine. Afterwards, climb the ramparts over to Ston where you can have a leisurely lunch of squid ink risotto to explore the town and its sights. By evening time, you will be ready for more wine, which can be found at the Wine Cooperative in nearby Putniković.
The walls still encircle the town too, but instead of keeping out invaders, they are a tourist draw. THe imposing structure climbs the hillside and its bastions tower high above Ston’s red rooftops. From the highest point, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of across the 58 shimmering salt pools and out across the peninsular to the Adriatic on one side and Mali Ston Bay on the other.
